Breathing & Relaxation

The art of relaxation will be one of the most valuable skills you will learn for dealing with the challenges of pregnancy, birth and life with your baby. Keep the relaxation exercises simple and practice often. There are many techniques for relaxation.

Relaxing WomanSome feelings of anxiety regarding lifestyle changes, adjustments to pregnancy and anticipation of the future are common for new families.

Deep Breathing
Deep abdominal breathing is the most efficient method of breathing for you and your baby. This technique assists you to relax and begin preparing for birth. The benefits of this type of breathing include:
  • a more efficient air exchange
  • decreased tension
  • strengthening of the abdominal muscles
Breathing techniques
Labouring mothers will find that as the contractions get stronger and labour intensifies using specific breathing techniques can be very helpful.

Breathing often reflects our state of relaxation or excitation. When at rest, breathing is usually slow and rhythmic, (such as when asleep). When tense, breathing may be erratic or we may hold our breath. Controlling breathing may help you become aware of your state so you can stay relaxed. Breathing techniques have been identified and are helpful to many women in labour.

The theory behind childbirth breathing patterns is based on the concentration required to focus on your breathing. During a contraction, your thought process is redirected from a pain response such as tension and breath holding to a learned relaxed breathing response. The successful development of a relaxed response to painful stimuli is most effective through a lot of practice.

Allow your body to relax as completely as possible and work with the contractions whilst using the breathing and relaxation techniques.
