As we do not birth at 'The Midwifery Centre', we do have Professional Indemnity Insurance which covers antenatal / postnatal and childbirth education, by a leading UK Nursing professional body.
Hospital midwives are covered by the NHS trust they work within in.
Our aim at The Midwifery Centre is to build close and trusting relationship,
based on good communication.
We respect our clients right to make their choices and decisions about
the care they want and need to receive. We provide up-to-date evidence
based information to help you make appropriate choices throughout your
pregnancy, about your birthing options with your main care provider and
during your postnatal period.
Implications for Clients
In order for compensation to be awarded, a case of negligence needs to
be proved by a court. If proven, the amount of compensation would be based
on the midwife's personal wealth. You may be advised against such a claim
as the amounts involved would be relatively small and legal experts may
be reluctant to award you much because of the effects upon the midwife's
family.
However, if negligence was to be proven, the midwife would be referred
for a disciplinary hearing with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)
the professional regulatory body, and if necessary removed from the midwifery
register. Such action is also available without the need to go through
a court of law.
Implications for Independent Midwives
We as independent midwives are governed by the same regulations as hospital
midwives. We are obliged to adhere to the rules and regulations set out
by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). There is additional protection
from the supervisors of midwives, whose remit is to ensure the safety
of mothers through regular inspections of the individual midwife to confirm
competence and safety to practice.
Midwifery Therapists
All our midwives have their own personal therapy insurances, which are
renewed annually. Each therapist has to show that they are regularly updating
their practice and competencies.
